About Dura

Dura means granary or storehouse in Shona. This open digital library preserves public-domain African books, starting with Zimbabwe, and makes them easy to find, read and download.

How rights work

Each book is reviewed before it is made public. For now, those reviews follow Zimbabwean law. If a review is missing, rejected, restricted or expired, the book and its files stay private.

How to read Dura books

  • On phones and tablets, open the EPUB in a reading app such as Apple Books or Google Play Books, or use the Read button to read online.
  • On Kindle, use Amazon's Send to Kindle service, which accepts EPUB files.
  • On computers, use any EPUB reader or open the PDF.

Takedowns

If you believe material should not be public, send a takedown request. On a credible claim, we hide the work while we review it.

A contact email is still to be configured. Please use the public form.

Bulk data and crawling

The catalogue metadata is CC0. Please use the bulk dumps, which provide short-lived download links for a catalogue spreadsheet (CSV), catalogue JSON Lines and page text, instead of crawling the site page by page.

Reading apps can use OPDS. Developers can use the API documentation and change feed to stay up to date. Only books that have been approved for open public access are included.
